Fun with a Ray Gun

Toy Ray GunThis is a lingering memory of Christmas, which for me is a lot about kids with annoying toys, toys that don’t work, wrong size batteries (if you remembered them at all…), toys that just suck.

I’m not a big fan of shooting toys for kids but one of our neighbours gave my son this ray gun for Christmas that is supposed to shoot out foam disks. I saw it on Christmas day and then noticed it was back in it’s box. My son said it did not work and asked me if I could fix it.

I just got so busy I forgot about it until now. And he has had to bug me several times to look at it, so by now I’m feeling like a very negligent parent.

I asked what was wrong with it and he said it just did not work, no flashing lights, no noise, and definitely no shooting disks. He and mommy had tried all sorts of different things but it just did not work.

Sigh, so I sat down tonight with some tools ready to pull this thing apart. Opened the battery compartment in the handle. Mmm both AA cells inserted the same way. Lets see if we flip one battery. Bzzzzzzzzz the motor starts spinning, the light flash and the thing shoots foam disks — a long way. This is a really addictive toy. I’ve wasted lots of time lining up drinking glasses on the kitchen table and shooting at them from the living room. Sigh, I have to give it back to my son tomorrow.

  1. You were a dead eye with a shotgun back in the day as I recall. I guess we would both discourage our kids making pipe bombs with home made gunpowder too.
